Jenny Backus, Co-President

Jenny Backus is the mother of an 8th grade boy at Deal. She and her husband Ed Pagano believe in strong and diverse public schools, the promise of public education and the importance of public service. A member of the DC Public Library Foundation Board, the World Learning Board, and Chair of the Board of the National Network Against Domestic Violence, Jenny is also the founder and president of Backus Consulting LLC, a strategic consulting and communications firm. As Co-Treasurer to the ADCA, she uses her professional experience with national campaigns, corporations, communications companies and consumer advocates, to promote transparency, accountability and long-term financial security for Alice Deal and the ADCA. This is her first term as President.

Lori Jackson, Co-President

Lori Jackson currently works as the Executive Manager for the Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust a foundation in Washington DC which allocates $5 million per year toward pediatric health and cancer care for low-income residents of DC and cancer research nationally. Lori believes in a robust educational system which provides academic success and opportunity for all learners, and an inclusive, engaged, and equitable society. 

Lori has three children, her youngest a rising 6th grader at Deal, a rising 9th grader at Duke Ellington, and a rising 11th grader at Wilson. Lori loves the Deal community and served as recording secretary for two years and President for two years prior to this academic year.  Ever since her children were school-aged at DC Bilingual PCS, Lori has been part of the parent leadership and committees to support the school and its teachers.  At Deal Lori has tried to build community among parents, teachers, and students. There is a great team of parents at Deal always willing to help out.

Dierdra Barksdale, CO-TREASURER

Deidra M. Barksdale is a CPA with over 26 years of finance and internal control acumen.  She is currently employed at UNCF as Director of Financial Services where she provides financial and analytical support to various programs including the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, a $1.6 billion dollar initiative funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, the UNCF STEM Scholars Program, a $20 million grant from the Fund II Foundation, as well as UNCF’s $50 million Career Pathways Initiative.  Prior to joining UNCF, Deidra was the CFO of Center City Public Charter Schools (2009-2011) and Community Academy Public Charter Schools (2007-2009).

Deidra has previously held positions with John Eaton’s Home and School Association in the roles of Co-President and Treasurer, and was the ADCA Co-Treasurer for SY2018-19.  Deidra has two children, a 7th grader at Deal and an 8th grader.  Deidra and her husband have always been active in the community and is excited to be working with Deal families in the treasurer role.

Kirsten Keefe, Co-Treasurer

Kirsten Keefe and her husband, Mike, have two students at Deal this year, an 8th grader and a 6th grader. They also have another child in line to enter Deal in the fall of 2023. Kirsten is an in-house attorney for Indiana-based Cummins Inc. focused on regulatory compliance in areas of trade controls, data privacy, anti-bribery. She brings a commitment to internal controls and transparent process to her role as Co-Treasurer. She appreciates the extraordinary effort parents and caregivers donate in time and treasure to support Alice Deal's students, teachers, faculty and staff, and looks forward to a great year of learning and adventure ahead.

Deborah Broderson, Secretary

Deborah Broderson has a stepdaughter who will be a 7th grader at Deal in 2019-2020. Deborah’s family has had great experiences with DCPS, starting at Janney Elementary, and is looking forward to contributing to the ADCA and the greater Deal community this year. Deborah, a government attorney, is the past president of the DC State Fair and has lived in the District for over a decade.

 

Federiga Bindi, Co-vp, fundraising & events

I am a Professor of Political Science, mainly focused on foreign policy. I have held several senior administration and advising positions, both in academia and in government, on both sides of the Atlantic. The past year was our second year at Deal, and in the public system for that matter, and we were overwhelmed by how great the school is, by its incredible leadership, and by the teachers! Giving it back is the minimum I can do!

Meagan Cahill, Co-VP, Communications

Meagan Cahill has an 8th grader at Deal and a 5th grader at Janney ES for SY19-20. Her daughter's experience at Deal has been great, and Meagan appreciates all of the volunteer work that takes place behind the scenes. The efforts allow students to have great experiences in middle school, and Meagan is excited to be a part of that effort. Last year, she served as the Co-VP of Communications with Hugh Morris and liked the experience so much, she’s back for more! She currently works for the RAND Corp. as a criminologist, studying and working to improve various aspects of the criminal justice system. She grew up in Northern Virginia but is very happy to be raising city kids over the border here in DC.

 

Hugh Morris, Co-VP, Communications

Hugh has two daughters at Deal in SY19-20, one in 7th grade and one in 8th grade. Having served three years on the ASAT and LSAT at Janney ES, and one year as Co-VP of Communications, he is happy to be supporting the Deal Community. Hugh’s career has focused on urban planning, including ten years at the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. He currently spends his days as a smart growth advocate, awarding grants to local Realtor associations to support main street revitalization, open space preservation and efforts to make communities more walkable and bikeable. Hugh is a D.C. native and his father went to Deal and Wilson.

Joshua gordon, VP, extracurricular activities and Sports

Josh Gordon is the father of two eighth graders. In his second year as the VP of Extracurricular Activities, he hopes to help Deal's Administrators and teachers in their huge task of keeping the numerous after-school sports and club opportunities available and organized for all students. This follows in-depth involvement in Lafayette Elementary's HSA. Josh is the Policy Director for a non-profit federal-budget focused organization.

Peter Boyce, ADCA Liaison to the LSAT

A former attorney, retired intelligence analyst and writer, I'm the proud father of four sons, all of whom were educated, or are being educated, at DCPS. In the position as liaison to the LSAT, I hope to bring my life experience, people skills, power of communication and an unyielding pledge to the best benefits for all children to ADCA. In 2019-20, my commitment to Deal will be undistracted because I have a seventh grader under the trusted care of Principal Neal. I am happy to be serving.
