Principal's Message

We had an exciting Teacher Appreciation Week at Deal! Our teachers truly enjoyed the notes and gifts of gratitude your children provided. Whether you sent a handwritten note, card, tweet, or gift, our teachers were truly touched by the vast showing of appreciation from the Deal Community! A heartfelt thank you to our ADCA for their support during the week. You are an amazing group of hard-working parents. I don't know what we would do without you

8th graders field trip at Gettysburg National Historic Park

On Thursday, our 8th graders were lucky enough to spend the day at Gettysburg National Historic Park as part of their current Individuals and Societies Unit! Thank you to Ms. Daniels, Ms. Huber, Ms. Simpson-Wayne, and Ms. Trenkle for creating a learning experience that was engaging and exciting! On Friday, a few of our students traveled to Six Flags with their math teachers for a day of fun and learning - in the PARK! Our students enjoyed their time with Mr. Assael, Ms. Dziato, and Ms. Lewis.

During Friday's 6th Grade International Museum, students and families were able to visit each 6th grade I & S classroom to celebrate our students' hard work. The event was the culmination of our students' research on the cultures, history, and geography of our five Embassy Adoption Program countries: Zambia, Mozambique, Bahrain, Russia, and Suriname! I am always excited to see our families visit Deal during the school day. Kudos to our 6th Grade I and S Teachers - Ms. Lane, Mr. Martini, Ms. McIntyre, Mr. Siddiqui, and Ms. Wesselhoft - for encouraging our students to think globally.

Yesterday, our building was filled with singing students and simply fantastic stage crew members - all preparing for our upcoming 6th Grade Musical. Shrek, Jr. is sure to be a hit! I cannot wait to see our young students in action on May 31(6:30 pm), June 1 (6:30 pm), and June 2 (2:00 pm). I hope to see you there!

We also had nearly 20 students participate in our first ZAP Saturday of the fourth advisory! I am so happy that our students are showing GRIT, and taking advantage of the opportunity to improve their grades.

We are slowly approaching our enrollment goal! Please stop by our Welcome Center this week between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm to register your student(s) for SY 18-19. You may also register from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm on Thursdays. Please email Ms. Baxter (roslyn.baxter@dc.gov) with any questions or concerns. Our goal is to have 100% of our students registered by the end of the year in order to more accurately complete student scheduling and summer planning.

Our final week of PARCC testing begins tomorrow! Our 7th grade students will complete the ELA portion of PARCC. I am so fortunate to have a wonderful testing team - Ms. Westover, Ms. Brandt, Ms. Lerum, Ms. A. Brown, Mr. Oliver, and Mr. Clark - who ensured that our test administration process was organized and efficient, our teachers were prepared, and our students were comfortable. I am so proud of all of our students for their resilience during the long days of testing!

The Deal Dress Code Task Force will hold its first two meetings/listening sessions on Thursday, May 24th at Deal from 9:00 - 10:00 am, and from 5:00 - 6:00 pm. Both meetings will be held in the Multipurpose Room. If you are interested in sharing your views and/or participating in updating the dress code, please try to attend one of these sessions. If you are not able to attend on May 24th, additional meetings will be held in June. Please email debbzerwitz@gmail.com to RSVP for one of the meetings.

Happy Mother's Day to all of our wonderful maternal figures. Thank you for all you do for our students. I hope you enjoy a wonderful Sunday! I look forward to seeing your children bright and early tomorrow morning.

Onward and Upward!
