Weekly Bulletin - May 6
I am excited to see our students working hard to finish the year strong. We will hold a ZAP Saturday session on May 12 from 9:00 am until noon. Students should report to Deal by 9:00 am with the assignments they need to complete. Please encourage your child to pick up assignments from his or her teacher by Friday, May 11.
Our visit from Bill Nye was amazing! The "Science Guy" filled our auditorium with inquisitive students, parents and Deal Community members who were elated to get up close and personal with a former Viking. Thank you, Politics and Prose and Ms. Redekopp, for making this exciting visit possible!
We are slowly approaching our enrollment goal; however, we still need more families to register for SY 18-19! Please drop by the Welcome Center to register your child(ren) anytime during the school day, and on Thursdays until 7:00 pm. Thank you to the 600+ families who have already registered!! Please reach out to Ms. Baxter (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you have enrollment questions.
We are creating a Task Force to create an updated dress code that promotes a respectful learning environment, does not perpetuate stereotypes or have a disparate impact or discriminatory effect on any particular individual or group, and allows students to express themselves through dress. Deborah Zerwitz, Deal parent, has agreed to chair the Task Force, and is looking for other parents, teachers, administrators, and students to participate. The Task Force will meet this spring and summer with the goal of unveiling an updated policy before the start of SY 18-19. We will schedule meeting times and locations to facilitate participation from all interested Deal constituents. Additional information regarding meeting times and locations will be included in future Weekly Bulletins. If you are interested in participating in the Task Force, please email Deborah at email@example.com.
Seventh graders will begin Math PARCC testing this week! I love the work I have seen in our math classes this year, and am excited for our students to show the growth they've made. Please remind your seventh graders to report to school on time, prepared to show what they know!
On Friday, I truly enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate our Cafeteria Staff for School Lunch Hero Day! Every day, our Cafeteria Staff works hard to provide nutritious and delicious meals for our students. Thank you, Ms. Barnes, Ms. Boyd, Ms. Dunbar, Ms. Huntley, Mr. Jordan, Ms. Pelham and Ms. Thomas! You all are wonderful!
Deal has the great fortune of having some of the most dedicated teachers in the city. Not only do they plan engaging lessons and field trips that bring their content to life, they also go above and beyond to tutor students after school and on the weekends. Our teachers also sponsor our after-school clubs and activities. Tomorrow marks the start of Teacher Appreciation Week. Please feel free to send an email or note of appreciation to your child's favorite teacher(s). If you would like to tweet something special, please use the DCPS hashtag #ThankATeacher.
Parent-Teacher Conferences will take place on Thursday, May 24th from 12:00 - 7:00 pm. Conferences with team teachers are by appointment, and sign-up will take place online. Beginning on Tuesday, May 7th, teams will send out a sign-up link. All non-team teachers (World Language, PE, Art, Music, Resource etc.) will be available for drop-in conferences.
I hope everyone has a wonderful week! Onward and Upward!
