Weekly Bulletin - August 19

Principal's Message:

Welcome back to school! I hope you and your family enjoyed the summer vacation and were able to take time to relax and have a little fun. Even though it was summer, the learning never stopped here at Deal. We hosted three Summer Programs, including Summer Math Acceleration Camp, Deal Fit Camp, and RISE for incoming 6th graders. Thank you to all of the Dealstaff members who participated in these programs. In addition to our student-centered programming, we also underwent a massive construction project. We now have a brand new cottage that will house two 7th grade teams! Additionally, we now have a brand new marquee. The members of our Local School Restructuring Team (LSAT) were quite instrumental in supporting the completion of these projects. We truly appreciate all of their support and expertise.

First Day Of School

It was great to see so many 6th graders and their families on Friday for our 6th Grade Orientation. Our newest Vikings seemed to have a great time exploring the building and meeting their teachers. We are truly excited about the first day of SY 18-19.  All students should plan to arrive by 8:30 tomorrow morning.

Deal has always been a school with high academic expectations and rigorous teaching and learning practices. As we continue to improve in those areas, we will now include an emphasis on goal setting and growth. Our entire community will be encouraged to embody the mantra Here We Grow! Teachers will be expected to grow; administrators will be expected to grow; our students will be expected to grow. A great example of that growth can be seen in our 2018 PARCC scores.

SEAD @ Deal

Social-Emotional Learning will be a new area of growth for us this year. In alignment with DCPS's focus on SEAD (Social Emotional and Academic Development), the Deal Community will experience Advisories four times per week. During the advisory time, students and staff will participate in activities that will develop self awareness, self management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness. Additionally, all of our teachers will incorporate the mindfulness and talking circle processes in their classes in order to build connections in a safe space.

We are fully staffed and our teachers are excited about the new year, and anxious to begin building relationships with their students. Our summer staff has worked tirelessly to prepare our building and ensure we are ready to hit the ground learning on the first day. Our entire staff has also participated in professional development about the teenage brain and we are prepared to reduce amygdala triggering behaviors so that the hippocampus and pre-frontal cortex are available for learning and decision making.

I am truly looking forward to an amazing year! Archbishop Desmond Tutu said, "You might have much of the world's riches, and you might hold a portion of authority, but if you have no ubuntu, you do not amount to much." Ubuntu is a South African philosophy that teaches the values of teamwork, collaboration, equality, helpfulness, appreciation, trust, and respect. I wish the entire Deal Community Ubuntu, and am eager to see everyone tomorrow morning.

Onward and Upward!

Alice Deal Community Association

Hi everyone. We are Maan Sacdalan and Peter Boyce, the Co-Presidents of the Alice Deal Community Association, providing this week's ADCA update. We are looking forward to meeting you all soon.  We wanted to flag a few important ADCA programs that need your support. You can also find more details on our new website.  And feel free to contact us with questions and comments at ADCAPresident@gmail.com

Thanks to everyone who has already made their 2018-2019 tax-deductible donations to the Alice Deal Community Association. We've raised 1/3 of our overall goal. The ADCA, a 501c3 non-profit organization, works closely with Principal Neal to fund academic, extracurricular, athletic and arts programs at Deal. We also supplement the DCPS budget since Deal has one of the lowest per pupil spending rates in the city.  Every dollar we receive from you means a Great Deal. So please donate today via our online link or drop off/mail a check to the ADCA Treasurers, 3815 Fort Drive, NW Washington, DC 20016.

Your ADCA donations this year have already gone to paying for things like 6th grade planners, the printing of our student handbook, and ice time for our new Deal Hockey team.  We have also received two very generous large donations from Deal families to pay for the printing of our Chinese textbooks and to underwrite a new sound system for our theatre and fund new technology in the classrooms. Thank you!

But there is lots more to do and more to raise.  We are looking for 100% parent participation and $110,000 raised.  Donations of all sizes gratefully accepted.

Everyone who donates to the ADCA in August, regardless of the size of your donation, is eligible to win a brand new ACER 2-in-1 Convertible HD Chromebook computer. Winner will be announced via email on

In addition to donations from Deal parents, we also rely on the support of sponsors from the community.  We would like to thank these wonderful businesses for supporting Alice Deal Middle School in 2018-2019. Please thank them for their support and consider them the next time you are shopping for goods or services.

Our friends from Janney Elementary have taught us a new way to secure funds for Deal from Amazon at a much higher rate than Amazon Smile. We've set up an Alice Deal Community Association Storefront. Just click the red SHOP AMAZON button on the front of our website every time you want to purchase something from Amazon.  You can also follow this link to our page  https://amzn.to/2nPsbnu.   Thanks for your support.

International Night - The Annual Deal Gala Auction - Deal Community Day- The Holiday Greens Sale & Spring Plant & Mulch Sale - Movie Night.  We need parent power to make our ADCA events succeed. See how you can help out. Whether you can give Deal one hour or one month, we've got the volunteer opportunity for you.

Thank you for all your support of the ADCA and of Alice Deal. Here's to a great year.
