Weekly Bulletin - August 26

Principal's Message:

We had a wonderful first week of school! All of our students were able to get their locks and lockers, find their classrooms, meet all of their teachers, review the Deal expectations, and participate in engaging lessons. Additionally, we were able to complete our first fire drill. I appreciate our staff and students' efforts to clear the building quickly and remain at a Voice Level of zero during the drill. The drill was an outstanding example of how our community works together to ensure a safe and predictable school environment.

#ADMSHEREWEGROW

On Friday, we celebrated the top twenty 7th and 8th graders who demonstrated growth on the 2018 PARCC with a pizza party. Those students will also participate in a field trip to Sandy Springs Adventure Park on Friday, August 31. Students are encouraged to return their permission slips to Ms. Neal by Tuesday, August 28.

We will mail the PARCC scores for students who were enrolled at Deal during the 2017 - 2018 school year this week. Our current 6th graders should receive PARCC scores from their elementary school. Please contact your child's grade level counselor if you have not received scores by September 7. (6th Grade: Camille White - camille.white@dc.gov; 7thGrade: Joy Monkou - joy.monkou@dc.gov; 8thGrade: Johnet Travers - johnet.travers@dc.gov)

6th Grade Family Workshops

On August 29 and 30 from 6:30 pm - 8:15 pm, Deal will offer workshops for 6th grade parents/guardians. All 6th grade parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to attend. The workshops will provide an opportunity for you to gain insight into life in middle school and to learn strategies for ensuring your child's successful transition to Deal. There will not be a general opening session. Parents/Guardians will report directly to the workshop of their choice at 6:30 pm.

For parents interested in information about the music program at Deal, there will be a special pre-session from 6:00 pm until 6:30 pm hosted by the Music Department. Some of the topics for the evening include:

*  Aspen: Basic Set-up and Use

*  Athletics at Deal

*  Organization and Communication at Deal

*  Special Education at Deal

*  Transitioning to 6th Grade - Strategies to Ensure Your Child's School Success

*  Understanding IB Rubrics for Mathematics

*  What to Expect from Your Reader and Writer - 6th Grade English at Deal

Please contact your child's team leader or Mr. Moore (michael.moore3@dc.gov) if you have any questions.

After-School Clubs and Activities

It is essential that we create positive relationships with 100% of our students. To that end, all teachers are greeting each student at the door and using strategies for ensuring equity of voice in every class. We will continue to offer a plethora of after-school clubs and activities that foster positive student-staff relationships outside of the classroom. We are so grateful to the Deal staff members who are willing to share one of their passions with students through an after-school club or activity. In the past, our clubs have included: coding, photography, ultimate frisbee, yo-yo club, Pokemon club, FCA, Girls on the Run and much more. The clubs and activities differ each year because they are based on staff passions and student interests. Students should see Ms. Neal if they are interested in starting a club or activity.

The full list of clubs and activities for the year will be included in next week's bulletin. We will also include information in the morning announcements. ALL AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES WILL BEGIN THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 4.

Emily Dickinson wrote, "The brain is wider than the sky." During Advisory this week, our students will learn about the pre-frontal cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala, and how these parts of the brain impact learning. This year, our staff and students will work on mindfulness strategies that reduce stress on the amygdala so that the hippocampus and pre-frontal cortex are available for learning and thoughtful decision making.

I am looking forward to seeing our students tomorrow morning, ready for Week Two!

Onward and Upward!

DONATE TO THE ADCA IN AUGUST & BE ELIGIBLE TO WIN A BRAND NEW CHROMEBOOK - JUST 5 DAYS LEFT!

Your tax deductible donations to the ADCA really make a big difference for Deal! Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. Thanks to your support in just the past week alone, we have been able to buy science supplies for the 6th grade, fund our fall Shakespeare festival (see above for details about tryouts for kids), pay for the copying of the Student Handbook, purchase new educational software, and start to work on upgrading the sound and lights for our auditorium. All of this was possible thanks to generous donations from parents and sponsors. But there is more to do and we are only half way to our goal of $110,000. Please make your tax-deductible donation here.

COMING TO THE 6th GRADE PARENT NIGHT THIS WEEK? PICK UP PIZZA & SOME DEAL GEAR AT THE ADCA TABLE!

Coming to 6th Grade Parent Workshops on August 29 and August 30? Don't worry about dinner. Leave the cooking to the ADCA and our sponsor, Pizzabolis. We will have pizza, cookies and sparkling water available for sale at the ADCA table, along with an amazing selection of Deal Gear for purchase. You can even make your ADCA donation and sign up to volunteer to lead an ADCA event right on site. We'll be there both nights.
