Saturday at Deal 

Our final Saturday STARS session took place yesterday. I greatly appreciate the hard work and consistency shown by the students who were invited to attend. A special thank you to Ms. Beckley, Mr. Feagen, Mr. Helsabeck, Ms. Lewis-Samuels, Ms. McClary, Ms. Peteet, Dr. Slocumb, and Ms. A. Thomas for providing engaging lessons and supporting our students as we prepare for the PARCC Assessment. Additionally, nearly 150 students from the metropolitan area joined our students at Deal for Model UN. Thank you to Ms. Trenkle for her outstanding organization and leadership.

PARCC Assessment

A few of our students will begin PARCC this week. This standardized assessment is only one measure of our students' academic growth. We encourage all students to do their best and to utilize mindfulness strategies to reduce any possible test anxiety.

RTI for Behavior

As we begin the fourth advisory, all teachers and staff will have a renewed focus on the Response to Intervention (RTI) process as it relates to behavior. The goal of the RTI process is to maximize student learning and the impact of effective research-based interventions in order to reduce the intensity of problem behaviors.  

Tier 1: Universal supports and instruction are the core programs and strategies provided to all students within the school building to promote successful student outcomes and prevent school failure.

Tier 2 and 3: Secondary supports will continue to be provided to students who do not respond to the universal academic and behavior RTI models. These students will be provided with more intensive and individualized supports.

This Week's Tier 1 Focus - Hall Passes

At Deal, students must have a signed hall pass (Deal Agenda) prior to leaving class.  

  • Hall passes are provided to students during 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th periods.  

  • In an effort to maximize instructional time, hall passes are not provided during first period, or during the first 15 or last 15 minutes of class.

  • Grade-level administrators or deans will contact the families of students who are found in the hallway, stairwell, or bathrooms during class time without a pass to notify them that their student will serve after school detention (3:15 - 4:00).

We greatly appreciate your support of the RTI process. By working together, we can ensure that our school community is safe, consistent, and predictable.

2019-2020 Annual Enrollment

All students must be enrolled for the 2019-2020 school year by June 14th.

All current 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students need to bring proof of residency to the Deal Welcome Center to complete the pre-printed enrollment documents. You can bring the documents to the Welcome Center during the school day. Evening hours are also scheduled every Thursday until 7:00 pm for families who are not able to come to the school during the day. The families of our 8th grade students should take their proof of residency to the high school they will attend.

FitCampNation Summer Camp is back again with more fun, excitement, activities and games than ever before! We will focus on fitness, intro to sports and enrichment, structured play, and nutritional education, all in a fun and nurturing environment!

6th grade recently started a student leadership culture group to assist us in fostering a safe, loving community. The group meets every Wednesday at 8:10 in room W103 with Mr. Burt and Mrs. White.

At the beginning of the 2nd advisory we started a peer tutoring program involving 25 8th graders acting as peer mentors for 25 6th graders.  Every Friday, these students pair up with each other to work on skills in reading or math. This advisory, we welcomed a new group of 6th graders to participate in the program.

8th GRADE PROMOTION DATES AND COSTS

Promotion is the ultimate celebration of three years of hard work and growth as a Deal student. The staff is very proud of our 8th grade class and can't wait to celebrate their achievements. A letter will be sent home with students next week with additional details, but we want families to be aware of the following information:

  • Theme Park Visit ($90) -  June 10th - The results of the student vote will be announced next week, but we know students will be excited about the results!

  • Promotion Practice (no cost) - June 11th - All students are expected to participate in the promotion practice at Deal during regular school hours.

  • 8th Grade Dance ($30) - June 11th - A highlight of the year, our 8th graders dress up and hit the dance floor at Deal from 7:00 - 10:00 pm. This is a popular event your child will not want to miss!

  • Promotion ($30) - June 12th - Students celebrate their promotion from 10:00 - 11:30 am at American University's Bender Arena (4400 Massachusetts Ave NW). Each student will receive five guest tickets.

We look forward to celebrating with our 8th graders and their families! Additional details will be shared in next week's bulletin and in a letter sent home with students.

2018-19 PARCC Testing


2018-2019 PARCC Testing PARCC testing will begin on April 8th, with the majority of students testing according to the following schedule: 7th grade: 4/24 - 5/2; 8th grade: 5/3 - 5/14; 6th grade: 5/15 - 5/22  

PARCC is the District-wide annual standardized assessment and all students are required to participate. Testing will take place each day from 8:45 am - 11:00 am. We ask families to avoid scheduling appointments during the times your children will be testing. Students will not be allowed to enter a test session late, nor are they allowed to be dismissed from a testing session and return to the test. Please see Chancellor Ferebee's letter regarding PARCC testing here. More detailed information and resources regarding PARCC testing at Deal will be shared in the coming weeks, for now, please review the Chancellor's Letter to Families about PARCC. The letter is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Amharic.

DO THE WRITE THING CHALLENGE

Does your middle schooler feel passionate about combatting violence? 


All Deal Vikings are invited to participate in an anti-violence essay competition sponsored by the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia and the National Campaign to Stop Violence. The Do the Write Thing Challenge asks students to reflect about the causes of youth violence and their power to stop it.


Students are asked to submit any written piece of 500 to 1000 words addressing the questions: How has violence effected by life? What are the causes of youth violence? What can I do about youth violence?


Essays should be submitted to NaCorey.Nichols@dc.gov by Friday, April 12th.

Deal students who need community service hours for their NJHS applications should reach out to Ms. White at Camille.white@dc.gov. There are some opportunities here at Deal either before or after school. 


Students who were inducted last school year are not a part of  the process for new inductees, but they may reach out if they would like to assist with the new inductee program in some way.

826DC Free Spring Break Camp for Students
826DC, a nonprofit in Columbia Heights, will be hosting a spring break camp titled "Got Your Back Comedy Camp". Students are able to register for the camp by visiting our registration form.

Boy Scout Troop 90 Wants to Welcome Alice Deal Students! All boys eleven or older are invited to join Boy Scout Troop 90 at Blessed Sacrament School. Troop 90 holds weekly meetings Wednesday nights at the Parish Center at 3630 Quesada Street NW from 7:30 - 8:30 pm and monthly campouts. Scouting gives young people the opportunity to explore a world beyond the boundaries of everyday life.  You get to try new things, develop friendships, provide service to others, build self confidence, and develop leadership skills.  And have fun while doing it!  Our activities include learning first aid, emergency preparedness, wilderness survival and other merit badges, rock climbing at Seneca Rocks, camping in Gettysburg National Military Park, backpacking in Philmont, New Mexico, scuba diving in St. Croix, ski trips to Wisp, community service projects, and many more.  We have scouts from Alice Deal and many other schools throughout the area.  Please come Wednesday night and check it out. Boy Scout Tropp 100 Boy Scout Troop 100 welcomes interested boys to come for a visit to learn more about Scouts and the Troop 100 program which includes camping, hiking, and community service.  The non-denominational Troop meets on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm at Saint Ann's Church on Tenley Circle.  Scouts range in age from 11 to 18 and come from public, charter, independent, and home schools.  The Troop has weekly meetings, monthly camping and hiking trips, and annual high adventure trips.  Additionally, community service hours are a key part of the Boy Scout experience.  Troop 100, "The Century Troop" is the oldest Troop in in Washington D.C. and recently celebrated its 100th year anniversary.  Please come check us out.  If you have any questions or would like to confirm a visit, please contact bsatroop100.dc@gmail.com
