Spotlight on LSAT

Deal’s Local School Advisory Team, better known as LSAT, meets once a month. But what does this group do? We sat down with LSAT parent reps to get more details about this team and its work.

What's the LSAT's mission?

The LSAT advises the principal on school priorities, policies, and resource allocation. Its primary goal is to ensure decisions are made collaboratively among educators, parents, and school staff to support student achievement and well-being.

What are some examples of issues that LSAT handles?

Key topics include reviewing and advising on the annual school budget and staffing plans, examining school sense of community and academic data, advising on the Comprehensive School Plan (CSP), and discussing curriculum or operational priorities.

Is there any difference between the LSAT and our Alice Deal Community Association (ADCA)?

Yes. Every DCPS school has its own LSAT, which is an advisory body focused on school operations, the school budget, and academic policy. Meetings include elected parent representatives, elected teachers and staff, and the principal. Reps are elected each spring for the upcoming school year.

The ADCA is a nonprofit organization that promotes cooperation among Deal families, teachers and administrators. It is open to all families and staff, raises funds, organizes community events, and supports school activities.

Can anyone join the LSAT meetings? If not, can I read the LSAT meeting minutes?

Because LSAT meetings often deal with preliminary budget and operational planning, meetings are generally attended by the elected and appointed representatives. However, meeting summaries and minutes are made available on the school website so all families can stay informed about what the team discusses. If parents are interested in joining, keep an eye out in the spring for an announcement about elections.

Meeting minutes and more info about the LSAT can be found at: https://www.alicedealmiddleschool.org/lsat

How do I contact the LSAT about something?

Families can contact the LSAT parent representatives with questions or concerns at LSAT@dealcommunity.org.
